Mircea Popescu, one of the oldest names in the Bitcoin community, died aged 41 from drowning in Costa Rica last month. With his passing, he left behind a huge fortune in Bitcoin, estimated at around $2 billion.
The Rise and Fall
Popescu became famous for being one of the pioneers of cryptocurrency, publicizing and promoting the initiative on his Trilema blog. In addition, the Romanian was responsible for creating the MPEx exchange in 2012.
According to local authorities, Mircea was swept away by a current and died in the area of Playa Hermosa, an area not suitable for bathers. The event was publicized by the Costa Rican website Teletica, and a woman who accompanied him identified the body.
Because it is limited to 21 million, and its nature is unseizable, many wonder what happens to bitcoins lost in cases of the death of their holders.
According to Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto “The lost coins just make everyone else's coins worth a little more. Think of it as a donation for everyone,”.
As controversial as they are, it's always sad to see people who worked and influenced the cryptocurrency community so much pass away. However, it's good to see that their ideas and attitudes continue to drive and benefit the entire community.
