Twitter CEO wants a decentralized social network
Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter, posted to his own social networking account that is funding a small independent team to develop an open and decentralized social network. The goal is that Twitter also move to this model.
According to the CEO, Twitter had the potential from the beginning to be an open network as a decentralized Internet standard, similar to the SMTP (email protocol) model. However, for a variety of reasons, they eventually took a different path and increasingly centralized the company.
Recently, with the explosion of Blockchain-based technologies that enable a decentralized approach to open and durable hosting, governance and even monetization. The social network decided to rethink its trajectory and finance the project of opening and decentralization of the platform.
Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard. 🧵
