New claims for unemployment benefits in the United States jumped 3.341 million in the week ended March 28, to a new record of 6.648 million, amid the strong adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the American economy, according to seasonally adjusted data published today by the Department of Labor.

The total was well above the expectation of analysts surveyed by The Wall Street Journal, of 3.1 million requests. The previous week's reading, which until then had been a record, was revised from 3.283 million to 3.307 million orders.
